Saint Basil of Ostrog, born in Popovo Polje in 1610 and passed away in the Ostrog Monastery in 1671, was a 17th-century bishop from Herzegovina and is today recognized as a universally venerated Orthodox saint. Originating from the Jovanović family in eastern Herzegovina, Saint Basil was ordained in the Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, and consecrated as the bishop of Zahumlje and Skenderija with his seat in the Monastery of Tvrdoš near Trebinje.
