Saint Basil of Ostrog

Saint Basil of Ostrog lived in the 17th century (1610–1671), a period when the survival of the Serbian people and church was under constant threat. Born as Stojan Jovanović in the village of Mrkonjići in Herzegovina, he felt the weight of the Ottoman yoke as a child, leading his parents to send him to the Zavala Monastery to save him from the "blood tax" (devshirme).
