Saint Basil of Ostrog

Saint Basil of Ostrog lived in the 17th century (1610–1671), a period when the survival of the Serbian people and church was under constant threat. Born as Stojan Jovanović in the village of Mrkonjići in Herzegovina, he felt the weight of the Ottoman yoke as a child, leading his parents to send him to the Zavala Monastery to save him from the "blood tax" (devshirme). A fascinating historical fact is that, even as a Metropolitan, he traveled on foot from village to village, bringing food and comfort to the people, while Ottoman rulers trembled before his serenity.

History records that he built the Ostrog Monastery in a place where construction was nearly impossible, within inaccessible cliffs, to create a sanctuary that armies could not easily conquer. Tradition says that even in his old age, he personally carried stones for the construction of the Church of the Holy Cross. He died peacefully in his cell, and legend has it that from the very rock where he passed, a grapevine immediately sprouted, despite there being no soil. The icon in your home serves as a reminder that spiritual strength is stronger than any stone or tyranny—it teaches us that true authority is built on sacrifice and prayer, preserving the hope of the Christian home through the centuries.
