The novel The Gulag Archipelago is an artistic and historical work about repression in the Soviet Union from 1918 to 1956, woven from letters, memories, and oral testimonies of 257 prisoners, as well as from the author’s own experience.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote this work in secret from 1958 to 1968 (he completed it on June 2, 1968); the first volume was published in Paris in December 1973. Solzhenitsyn himself defined this monumental work as a literary investigation.

In a documented and journalistic manner, he presents countless facts of Stalinist repression. Supported by brutal evidence, these accounts allow every reader to feel like a prisoner of the Gulag themselves—a prisoner who is arrested without guilt, tortured night after night through interrogations, and subjected to sophisticated methods of abuse until forced to sign confessions for crimes never committed.
