The Story Behind the Image

In 1690, following the retreat of the Habsburg forces, the Ottoman Empire launched a brutal campaign against the Serbs who had allied with Austria. Under the leadership of Patriarch Arsenije III Čarnojević, tens of thousands of Serbian families crossed the Sava and Danube rivers, leaving behind their ancestral lands in a mass exodus that would shape the Serbian nation for centuries to come. Paja Jovanović, one of the greatest Serbian painters of academic realism, immortalized this moment in 1896 on a canvas spanning over 22 square meters. The painting is today considered a national icon and is kept in the Serbian Patriarchate in Belgrade.
