Historical Facts
Tolkien’s fantastic tales of Middle-earth were created when he, like many fathers, began inventing stories for his sons—stories that gradually grew into the reality of an entire imaginary world. Then, in the summer of 1930, something crucial happened for the birth of one of the greatest books of the 20th century.
“I was sitting and marking school exam papers. One student kindly left a page blank, which is the best thing that can happen to someone grading papers. On that empty sheet I scribbled: ‘In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.’ I didn’t know then, and I don’t know now, why. In my case, names always came first, and they set the story in motion in my mind. In the end, I simply thought it would be a good idea to find out what a Hobbit is, and what he is doing in that hole in the ground.”
Many debates have been written about what Tolkien meant with his work, and whether—given the time in which the novel was created—he had Nazis or communists in mind when creating the evil Orcs. Besides political interpretations, The Lord of the Rings has also been interpreted in philosophical, religious, cultural, and even esoteric ways. Tolkien, a World War I veteran who lost all his friends in the Battle of the Somme, responded by saying that he disliked allegory and had no interest in “thesis-driven” books.
