A ROMAN EMPEROR ON THE SERBIAN TURF - CONSTANTINE THE GREAT
A ROMAN EMPEROR ON THE SERBIAN TURF
In one of his songs Bajaga says:’ This land was created by warriors and poets and a number of different gods’. And that holds true since many armies, rulers, and conquerors stormed through the Balkans and Serbia. Some lingered longer, some only to march onward and storm off into the next battle, and some remained, by their will, or perhaps because they had no other choice. We were hosts to many world empires, and I firmly believe that despite many atrocities that befell this country we got something in return which is first and foremost - knowledge, culture, humanity, and in doing so we became richer in spirit.
His work was both great and rather controversial
As early as the 3rd century, Constantine, one of the most important figures in the history of Europe and Christianity, one truly great Roman emperor and reformer, was born in the Roman city of Naisus ( the Nis of today). What Christians will remember and celebrate is the Edict of Milan, a document that saved Christian believers from great persecution throughout the empire and finally Christianity becoming a recognized and religion of equal standing to all the others that existed on the territory of the empire. One wonders as to why Constantine did that. The church will tell you that he was enlightened, in that that well-known legend goes to say that he saw a vision of a big cross emerging on the sky, a sign that he would put on the shields of his soldiers and that would bring about many famous victories to him Though, he was more likely to have had political reasons for this. There is no evidence to suggest that he was a believer at all, and the sins he had weighed on his shoulders were immense///// (the murder of his son and wife were among the gravestones), yet he was a Roman emperor.
The symbol of the Roman Empire and the symbol of Nis alike
Of the seventeen Roman emperors born on the territory of Serbia, Constantine is the greatest. According to the Julian Calendar, his day is celebrated on May 21. Today this date is the jubilee of the city of Nis, the Nis airport also bears his name, one elementary school, and at the bridge not far from the Nis Fortress with an impressive monument to the emperor.
A book based on historical facts
There are many mysteries around for centuries associated with the name of Constantine the Great. If you want an official history, you can easily find it in many sources such as history books or the Internet, and if you want a touch of mystery and long forgotten ancient spirits that once ruled this region, I recommend reading the Constantine Crossroads, a novel by Dejan Stojiljkovic. You might like to read about what kind of documents were burnt by Hitler’s Wehrmacht soldiers on their retreat from Nis, what they were trying to find related to Constantine the Great, and if they succeeded in doing so ... We believe you are most probably going to enjoy it!
