RIBLJA CORBA - A SYMBOL OF REBELLION
Riblja Corba (fish soup) is a somewhat unusual name for a rock band and it was actually created as a joke of Bora Djordjevic back in 1978, while with guitarist Misa Aleksic, he sat in the garden of the Sumatovac restaurant in Belgrade. They sat for hours and discussed how to call the band. The most serious proposal was Bora and warriors, but Bora did not like to expose himself to the forefront. In-jokes he suggested that they should name the band Riblja corba (at that time Belgrade slang for those women's days) and it probably would not have happened that Zoran Predic, a reporter for the famous TV show did not sit at the next table. Zoran liked that provocative name and wrote a text about Riblja Corba.
A breakthrough to the very top of the Yugoslav music scene
Borisav Bora Djordjevic or only Bora Corba was born in Cacak. He was a member of several bands, Cacak and Belgrade (Together, Sunflower, Early Frost), before deciding to establish his band. Bora was a rock and roll brand, and very soon the new band became one of the most popular rock bands in Serbia, but also throughout Yugoslavia. Bora was a symbol of rebellion, and his songs were often very critical to the authorities and many negative phenomena and developments in society. He did not spare anyone, and because of the songs on the album Koza Nostra, he was accused of insulting the working class in Yugoslavia, but the charges were later dropped.
The song with which the group drew attention to itself is the famous Lutka sa naslovne strane (puppet from the front page). Everyone knows this legendary song dedicated to the unknown models that have often been an inspiration to various musicians. For a long time, it was wrongly assumed that the poem was dedicated to one of our most beautiful models Biljana Nevajda with whom Bora had a short, but burning love affair. It's true that he dedicated two other legendary songs to this beautiful girl, Dva dinara druže (Two Dinars, my friend) and Poslednja pesma o tebi (The Last Song About You). Biljana split from Bora in the Lipa coffee shop. After reading the verses of his poem to her, their paths split. He went to the bathroom, and after leaving the toilet, the famous grandmother or “baba sera” warned him to owe her two dinars. It was enough for a new song (Dva dinara druze) in his famous notebook, from which he does not separate even today. We got the title that we all know and sing today.
The rock scene is still theirs
Riblja corba has released more than twenty albums and held countless concerts in the country and abroad. Everybody knows their songs, and they are still active today. Today, Bora lives in Slovenia, and he has drunk empty his barrel of brandy for a long time already, as Bora jokingly says to journalists when they ask him, if he still drinks a lot. We expect even more good songs from these rocker pioneers.
