Saint Mrat (Stefan of Decani):
The most important thing about Saint Stefan of Decani (Mratindan) is his unwavering faith in divine healing and the power of forgiveness. Even though his own father, King Milutin, ordered him to be blinded, Stefan did not allow his soul to darken with anger. According to tradition, Saint Nicholas appeared to him in a temple in Constantinople, holding his eyes in his palm and saying: "Do not fear, Stefan; behold, your pupils are with me, I am guarding them." After five years spent in darkness and prayer, his sight was miraculously restored. This is why he is "Saint Mrata"—the one who "darkens" (mutes) injustice and brings the light of truth. In Serbian folklore, there is a saying, "Saint Mrata, snow at the door," marking his role as the guardian of the household before winter, but essentially, he is the guardian of inner vision. His icon in the home is a reminder that God never abandons us, even when the whole world turns its back, and that forgiveness is the only key that opens the door to divine mercy. He built Visoki Decani, the most beautiful Serbian monastery, as a symbol of gratitude, teaching us that for every gift from God, we must respond with beauty and kindness.
