The execution of Jesus is an event that took place in the 1st century, during which Jesus was arrested, tried and scourged and finally executed by crucifixion. Jesus was executed on the orders of Pontius Pilate, the prefect of the Roman province of Judea. He died crucified on a cross, which was a gruesome and humiliating way for the Romans to punish rebels. All these events together are called the passion or suffering of Jesus.

The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates this event two days before Easter, on Friday.

The crucifixion of Jesus is described in all four gospels, as well as in some historical texts of Jesus' contemporaries, which is why it is considered a real, historically documented event. Christian tradition shows that Jesus was executed at the request of the Jewish elders, who considered his teachings blasphemous. Historically, Jesus appears to have been executed as a potential troublemaker.

In Christian theology, Jesus' redemptive martyrdom and death are the foundation of the doctrine of salvation. Christians believe that his death was necessary for the forgiveness of sins, on which the doctrine of repentance is based.
