Saint Vasilije of Ostrog

Saint Vasilije of Ostrog was born in the village of Mrkonjići in Popovo Polje in 1610. As the Metropolitan of Zahumlje and Herzegovina, he retreated to the caves of Upper Ostrog, where he passed away in 1671 while living an ascetic life. His incorruptible relics still rest in the Ostrog Monastery today, which has become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Balkans.
