Saint Panteleimon or (in the Serbian people) Saint Pantelia was born in Nikomidia (today's city of Izmit in Turkey), from a rich pagan father Evstorgi and a Christian mother Evula. His birth name was "Panteleon", which translates as "lion in everything". Later, his name was changed to "Panteleimon", which has a different, opposite meaning.

As a young man, he studied first at a grammar school, where secular sciences were taught. Then he studied medicine, with the then famous doctor Efrosin. He became his assistant and followed him everywhere. The old persecuted Christian Ermolaius converted him to Christianity. Panteleimon became a great Christian, who tried to help people, above all with his medical skills.

One blind man, whom the doctors treated in vain, he healed with the name of Christ. The doctors accused him to Emperor Maximian, before whom he declared himself a Christian and before whom he healed a dispossessed man in the same way as he healed a blind man. The emperor put Saint Panteleimon to torment, but the Lord appeared to him several times and healed him. Finally, at the point of loss, he kneels to pray. The executioner hits him on the neck with a sword, but the sword breaks. And he could not cut him down until he had finished the prayer and himself told them to cut him down.
