In Slovenian mythology, as well as in the mythologies of all ancient civilizations, the world is depicted as a sacred tree, or tree of life (usually oak in our country), which, with its eternal and renewing greenery, represents the very axis of life as the axis of the world. Its top represents the space of the sky and the root of the tree - the lower world.

The tree canopy is dominated by gods led by Perun, the ruler of men and the lord of the sky, and at the root of the tree is Veles, who in his second form (snake or dragon) rules the underworld, that is, the world inhabited by ancestral spirits.
