The Holy Chains of the Apostle Peter are celebrated on January 16 according to the old Julian calendar (January 29 according to the new Gregorian calendar).

Immediately after the death and ascension of Jesus Christ, the persecution of Christians began, which lasted for more than three hundred years. The emperor's governor, Herod, governor of Galilee, executed James, John's brother, and, at the instigation of the Jews, ordered Peter to be arrested and thrown into prison. Peter was sleeping in the dungeon chained between two soldiers, and the night before he was brought to court, the whole dungeon lit up and an angel tapped Peter on the ribs, woke him up and said to him: "Get up, put on your clothes and gird yourself, then come with me." Peter stood up, and the fetters fell from his feet, and he went with the angel. The soldiers slept like the dead, so the angel led Peter past the guard, and when they reached the iron city gate, it opened by itself, and thus Peter was freed from prison and probable death.

According to popular belief, milder weather is caused by Verižnice ("Sacred Chains"), because God begins to warm the earth with red-hot chains. In many places, Verige is considered a major holiday.

The population of Kosovo celebrates Verižnaki because of the plague, in some villages because of cattle, and herders celebrate them because of their cattle.

It is believed that whoever wears a suit sewn to the Chains of Honor will be killed by lightning.
