Saint Basil of Ostrog

Saint Basil of Ostrog (1610–1671) was the Metropolitan of Zahumlje during the harshest Ottoman persecutions. History records that he personally chose the caves of Ostrog for his spiritual labor, transforming harsh nature into the most visited sanctuary in the Balkans. Small icons of him began to be mass-produced in the late 19th century, as people traveling on foot to Ostrog wanted to take at least a piece of the holy mountain home.
