Saint Sava

Saint Sava lived during the momentous 12th and 13th centuries (1174–1236), a time when Serbia struggled for its place between East and West. A fascinating historical fact is that Sava was not just a monk, but a supreme diplomat who, in 1213 in Nicaea, secured the autocephaly of the Serbian Church—a pivotal step for national sovereignty. History records him as the author of the Krmčija (Nomocanon), which introduced written law and Christian civil rights to Serbia for the first time. His contribution to science is equally fascinating; he founded the first true hospital in Studenica based on Byzantine models, making him the father of Serbian medicine.
