Historical Portrait of Saint George
Saint George (Georgius) was a real historical figure, a high-ranking Roman officer born in the 3rd century to a noble family in Cappadocia. History records him as a man of a brilliant military career and a favorite tribune of Emperor Diocletian. However, when the persecution of Christians began, Georgius committed an act of supreme civic and spiritual courage: he tore up the Emperor's edict of persecution before the entire Senate, renounced his privileges, and publicly confessed his faith.
His battle with the "dragon" is a historical metaphor for his victory over the tyranny and pagan cruelty of that time. He was tortured for seven days but remained steadfast, leading to the mass conversion of Roman soldiers who saw in him the ideal of knightly honor.
