Who was Saint George?
Saint George or Saint George was a Roman soldier in the guard of Emperor Diocletian, who was martyred during the persecution of Christians.
In Christianity (Eastern and Western) he is celebrated as Saint George. In art, he is often depicted slaying a dragon.
He is very celebrated by Serbs, and he is often called Saint Djuradj, and he is celebrated twice a year: on St. George's Day, 6.5., and Djurdjic, 16.11.
In Christian iconography, Saint George has been depicted since the 7th century as a soldier (without a horse, in a standing position) and with a spear or a sword in his right hand.
Who is the woman in the painting of Saint George?
Another depiction of Saint George has appeared since the 9th century: on horseback, in ducal attire, slaying a dragon with a spear. In this depiction, a female figure in gentlemanly attire is standing next to him, a little further away.
It is believed that the woman in the icon is actually Empress Alexandra and that she symbolizes the early Christian church, and that the dragon that George kills symbolizes polytheism. The depiction of Saint George killing the dragon is based on a popular legend of Christian mythology — "George and the Dragon".
When are St. George's Day and St. Djurdjic celebrated
St. George's Day is celebrated on May 6 and St. Djurdjic Day on November 16. The icon associated with St. George's Day depicts St. George on horseback slaying a dragon, while the icon used for Djurdjic depicts St. George as a soldier standing in a field, with a spear in his right hand.
