DETALJNIJE
Honor and History
The Montenegrin cap carries some of the strongest symbolism in the Balkans. The red circle on top (tepeluk) represents blood shed for freedom, while the black rim (deravija) symbolizes mourning for past times and fallen heroes (specifically linked to sorrow after the Battle of Kosovo). The golden embroidery on top, often consisting of five golden threads, symbolizes centuries of struggle, while the embroidered arcs represent the "rungs" or stages of freedom. It is a mark of defiance for a people who never accepted defeat, transforming attire into an eternal monument to liberty.
Occasions for Wearing
The Montenegrin cap is worn during moments that demand the utmost respect and dignity. It is essential at traditional weddings, baptisms, Patron Saint's days (Slava), and major folk assemblies. Beyond ceremonial use, it is a key component of attire for folklore ensemble performances and a precious family mark proudly kept and displayed in homes as a symbol of ancestry and heroism.
