The icon of the Holy Mother of God is the most revered icon in Hilandar and the most significant icon of the Serbian people.

According to tradition, it belongs to the order of those icons painted by the apostle and evangelist Luke, the first painter of Christianity.

The miraculous icon of the Mother of God is guarded by the courts of all the Nemanjić family. By the end of the 14th century, it passed from the court of the Serbian emperor Dušan the Strong to the Studenica monastery. At the beginning of the 15th century, Studenica became a target of Turkish invaders. Informed that the Turks were coming towards the monastery, the monks quickly made sure to save the most valuable valuables from it. Thus, they fixed the icon of the Mother of God of the Trinity on the saddle of a donkey, which they let go wherever the Mother of God's will led it. And the donkeys crossed almost all of Serbia and Macedonia to reach Mount Athos, where they stopped not far from Hilandar.

In 1905, at the request of the command of high-ranking officers of the Russian army, which was at war with Japan, a copy of the icon of the Virgin of the Trinity was made. She was sent to the battlefield to help the Orthodox Russian army. And the Russians really started to win. When peace was made between the two empires, the copy was returned to Hilandar. In the nineties of the 20th century, a magnificent copy of the Virgin of the Trinity arrived in Serbia. This copy is kept in the church of Saint Sava in Vračar.
