Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas lived in the 4th century (approx. 270–343 AD) in the city of Myra, in ancient Lycia (modern-day Turkey). A fascinating historical fact is that Nicholas was a participant in the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 AD, where he so fiercely defended Orthodoxy against heresy that, according to tradition, he struck the heretic Arius. History records him as a fearless defender of justice; the story remains famous of how he prevented the execution of three unjustly condemned officers by literally grabbing the executioner's sword with his bare hands.

Nicholas was not only a spiritual leader but a man of action—during a great famine in Myra, he used his wisdom and authority to convince sea captains carrying grain to Constantinople to unload a portion in Myra. Miraculously, not a single kilogram was missing when the cargo reached the Emperor. He died at a venerable age, and in 1087, his relics were moved to Bari, Italy, where they remain today.
