Historical Portrait of Saint Petka

Saint Petka was a historical figure born in the 11th century in the town of Epivatos (modern-day Turkey). History remembers her as Paraskeva, a woman who, after her parents' death, distributed her wealth to the poor and retreated to the Jordanian desert, where she spent decades in fasting and prayer. Her historical fate is inextricably linked to Serbia: through the efforts of Princess Milica, her relics were brought to Belgrade at the end of the 14th century, protecting the capital for centuries.

She is a historical symbol of the power of female asceticism. Although she lived in absolute solitude, her miracles made her an "omnipresent" mother for the entire Balkans. Today, her relics rest in Iași (Romania), while her miraculous spring remains at Kalemegdan, Belgrade.
