The Historical Journey of Trojerucica and John of Damascus

The history of this icon begins in the 8th century with Saint John of Damascus, a great theologian and defender of icons. A historical fact records that the Caliph in Damascus, due to a slander, ordered John's right hand to be cut off. Holding his severed hand, John spent the night in prayer before this icon of the Virgin. In the morning, he woke up with his hand completely healed. In gratitude, he had a "third hand" cast in silver and attached to the icon—thus creating the Three-Handed Virgin.

Later, the icon came into the hands of Saint Sava, who brought it to Serbia. According to tradition, it eventually arrived at the gates of Hilandar on its own, carried on the back of a donkey.
