Saint John the Baptist
Saint John the Baptist lived in the harsh 1st century, in the Judean deserts under Roman rule. A fascinating historical fact is that John hailed from a priestly family (son of Zechariah and Elizabeth), yet instead of the comfort of temple service, he chose the life of an ascetic, clothed in camel hair and nourishing himself solely on wild honey and locusts. History records him as a fearless critic of immorality; he did not hesitate to publicly rebuke King Herod Antipas for his unlawful relationship with Herodias, which ultimately cost him his freedom and life in the fortress of Machaerus.
John was the first to recognize Jesus of Nazareth, saying: "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." In Serbian history, Jovanjdan is one of the three most widely celebrated Slavas, and folk tradition says that on this day, "the sun returns to the east." The icon in your home serves as a reminder of an unwavering moral compass—it teaches us that truth is more precious than life and reminds us that true authority stems from inner strength, preserving the honor of the Christian home through the centuries.
