Saint Sava
Saint Sava lived at the turn of the 12th to 13th century (approx. 1174–1236 AD), during the fateful period of the birth of the Serbian state and church. A fascinating historical fact is that Sava was not only a monk but a supreme diplomat of his time; he traveled to Nicaea, Jerusalem, and throughout the East, securing Serbian church independence in 1219. History records him as the author of the Zakonopravilo (Nomocanon), the first Serbian constitution, which introduced Byzantine law and civil order to the young nation. He founded the first hospital at Studenica Monastery and, with his father Simeon, built Hilandar, making it the center of Serbian literacy.
There is a poignant historical account that Sava, sensing his end, died in Tarnovo, but his relics were later moved to Mileseva, where they became such a source of national strength that the Ottoman Sinan Pasha burned them in Belgrade in 1594 in a desperate attempt to break the Serbian spirit.
