Tamjan je jedan od mirisa koji se spominju u Starom zavetu, prema uputstvu koje je Mojsije, kako se navodi, dobio od Gospoda. Uz zlato i smirnu, jedan od darova koje su mudraci s Istoka doneli novorođenom Hristu bio je i tamjan.

Kađenje tamjanom simbol je ljudske i molitve svetitelja Bogu koja se uznosi ka nebu kao što se diže dim od tamjana. Dim je širio čarobni miris i mislilo se da ima očišćujuće dejstvo u vreme nevolje.
