Saint George

Saint George lived at the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th century (approx. 280–303 AD), during the Diocletianic Persecution. A fascinating historical fact is that George was an exceptionally promising young officer, a favorite of the Emperor himself, holding the title of Comes (one of the highest military ranks). When Diocletian issued the edict to persecute Christians, George did not flee; instead, he tore up the imperial decree before the entire Senate. History records that he endured tortures so horrific they seemed impossible for the human body—from being broken on a wheel of knives to being buried in quicklime.

Throughout these trials, he remained calm and prayed, leading even the Emperor's wife, Alexandra, to believe in Christ. The feast of Djurdjic is specific to the Serbian people, commemorating the translation of his relics to the city of Lydda, where Emperor Constantine later built a magnificent church in his honor. The icon in your home serves as a reminder that the Christian "knightly code" is always relevant—it teaches us dignity under pressure and reminds us that true authority is built on sacrifice, not force, preserving the honor of the Christian home through the centuries.
