The most recognizable symbol of Niš - Niš Fortress
Niš is the largest and most important city in the south of Serbia, and one of the most important and most recognizable symbols of this city is the Niš Fortress. It is located in the very center of the city on the right bank of the Nišava River. It is connected with the city via a bridge which was believe it or not demolished and rebuilt more than twenty times.
From Naisus to today
Do you know that the first fortress was built halfway through the second century, and it was made by no others than the Romans - it was the famous fortress of Naisus. Naisus is the birthplace of Constantine the Great, who expanded it and magnificently decorated it. In the fifth century Huns, led by Attila destroyed Naisus and since the seventh century the Slaws have been besieging and chasing it. In the eleventh century in the fort was a strong Byzantine crew, and they erected on the foundations of the ancient fortress a medieval fortress. Stefan Nemanja conquered this fortress at the end of the twelfth century and held a famous encounter with German ruler Friedrich Barbarossa who was on his way to Jerusalem in one of the Crusades.
The Niš fortress was a key cornerstone in the fight against the Turks who finally conquered it at the end of the fourteenth century. The mighty Turkish army crushed like a storm on the city walls, which could resist for over twenty-five days – afterwards sultan Murat entered the city and set it on fire. Three centuries later, another Sultan brought from Constantinople four hundred maisons who built a new fortress that would be the border to the Habsburg monarchy.
An unavoidable place for all tourists
Today, the Niš Fortress is the best preserved fortress in the Balkans. Two thousand years it has been plagued by various troubles and conquerors - people of any religion and nation tried but did not manage to destroy it. Her walls are eight meters high and three meters wide, occupying an area of more than twenty hectares. From several entrances, the southern Stambol and the western Belgrade Gate remain preserved. The fortress is an inevitable place for all tourists who come to Nis. It houses bars and restaurants and a famous summer stage, which becomes the center of cultural events during the summer. Famous Film Concerts in Niš, various concerts and theater performances and of course Nišville - one of the biggest and most famous jazz festivals in this part of Europe.
The best building works are indestructible
Therefore, every tour of Niš, which has something to show, start from the Niš fortress, which is the witness that the best architectural works are indestructible because people have invested the best part of themselves, for the benefit of others.
