Serbian Water Polo: Fun Facts, History, and Champions' Gear
When you mention Serbian sports, the first associations with absolute dominance, pride, and success are definitely – our water polo players. The Serbian national water polo team, affectionately known as the "Dolphins" (Delfini), is not just a team; it is an institution that has been setting standards in pools around the world for decades.
But how much do you really know about the history of the "Dolphins"? Do you know which players defined an era and how you can wear a piece of that glorious history? Here are the most interesting facts and a summary of successes that are retold for generations.
The Golden Era: From Rio to Paris
If you thought the medals were a coincidence, the statistics say otherwise. In the last two decades, Serbia has been arguably the most successful water polo nation on the planet.
Building on decades of quality, our "Golden Boys" achieved what only a few can dream of – they won three consecutive Olympic gold medals:
- Rio de Janeiro 2016 – Breaking the barrier and winning the long-awaited gold.
- Tokyo 2020 – Defending the throne in a spectacular finale, marking the retirement of the legendary "Magnificent Six" generation.
- Paris 2024 – Proving that the new generation also has champion DNA, continuing the dominance against all odds.
Rulers of the World: World Championships
The dominance of the "Dolphins" didn't stop at the Olympics. Serbia (including the SCG era) has been a formidable force on the global stage for years. The World Championship titles in Montreal (2005), Rome (2009), and Kazan (2015) are particularly memorable. Being on top of the world was not an exception for our team, but a rule, cementing Serbia's status as a water polo superpower.
Kings of Europe: An Unrepeatable Streak
Even more impressive is the streak at the European Championships. Did you know that Serbia managed to win four consecutive European gold medals? From Eindhoven 2012, through Budapest 2014, the unforgettable Belgrade 2016, to Barcelona 2018 – the anthem "Bože pravde" was a regular repertoire in European pools. Such dominance is rarely seen in modern sports.
The latest gold medal is added in 2026 in front of the home crowd in Belgrade!
For these guys, podiums are not a dream; they are a daily routine.
Legends of the Pool: Who are the Heroes?
Serbian water polo has produced names that are spoken with reverence worldwide.
