Flute throughout Serbian history
Although not specifically a Serbian invention, nor only a Serbian instrument, the flute is part of Serbian history and tradition and as such a national instrument. The flute is a mythical legacy of the forest and shepherd deity Pan, the god of caves and groves, who delighted other deities, nymphs and people with his playing. Flute is a musical instrument that symbolizes harmony in nature.
The peculiarity of the magical sound of the Serbian flute produces a recognizable, warm, gentle and soft sound that the whole world admires and worships. The Serbian flute evokes emotions in a magical way, it is capable of conjuring up both euphoria and apathy, happiness and sadness, with it you can both grieve and rejoice. With its sound, it unites soul and body, both living and dead, male and female. Speaking about the Serbian flute and the Serbian sound that belongs to every Serb, because it is woven into our genetic code and our collective unconscious, Bora Dugić, the Serbian king of the flute, adds: "Today, our genetics and our state of consciousness are directed in a different direction or, perhaps, it tries to erase itself, but the sound of the flute as a genetic property will never be completely erased from our brain."
Flute is a folk woodwind instrument mostly used by men. It is made of hollow wood called zove, maple or walnut, from one piece of wood, but today, due to better compatibility with other instruments, it is made from two parts. There are several types, shapes and names, such as pipes, duduk, duduče, ćurlik, ćurlikalica (depending on the size), but the most common name is flute. The price of this instrument throughout history depended on the decoration, and it was decorated with carving or pyrography of various Serbian motifs.
And how were these authentic Serbian products made in the past?
The branch was cut in autumn, and its processing started at the end of winter. The bark was removed with a steel knife, then the knife was placed in the heart of the branch and with a sharp blow the branch was split in half. They were covered with milk, so that they fit better on each other, and tightly tied with wool so that they would not twist. In the spring, the halves were glued together with a mixture of one egg white, three cloves of crushed garlic and plum resin. In order to maintain humidity, the flute was repeatedly coated with oil and vinegar, and at the end it was baked in ram fat so that it was well soaked in fat.
For flutes made in this way, sale was out of the question, they remained in the family and were handed down from father to son as a bequest.
